Did you get the new skimmer for the cold tanks yet? What model were you going with?

Randy......no upgrade on the skimmer yet (maybe another week).... I'm still using the Deltec ap600. The tank really could use a bigger skimmmer though....it's kind of borderline right now. A bigger skimmmer would lead to fewer necessary water changes.
I am considering a cold conversion.....I think it really depends on a visit to Neah bay where those red stawberries came from. If there's a wide variety there....I might convert. I'm going through a bit of a burnout phase on my warm water tank right now.....and there is an allure in collecting your own stuff. A conversion would be real easy..... everything is in place already....just lower the thermostat and turn off 14 halides....permamently.

What is your initial vision? Kelp forest tank? Reef wall rubble/sand zone?
I think I need a few more dives to see the bio types. I did see some kelp in one of your tanks a semi kelp forest with some surge would be pretty cool looking.

That's a good question....I'd probably replicate a reef wall. I would have kelp though....perhaps a stand in the middle. I currently have a kelp plant in my small tank....but, it never did that well under the two 24watt T5's. I turned the other 4 on....and now it's growing quite well. The concept is just in the back of my mind....but, if things continue to do well....who knows.

I think our local kelp beds die off each winter i wounder if they would do so in our tanks with no lighting changes or if they would contiue to grow.
I know doing the switch is just a thought but hey i bet the 850 was "just a thought" at one time.

I think the kelp dies off from either getting too cold or losing light....both of which I can control. I want to see if my current plant continues to grow long term....or at least past the Sound's kelp beds.

Steve,
I am very interested in your setup as I have been wanting to do a cold water setup for some time. Couple questions for you, first did you build the two tanks yourself? I noticed they have very think walls which I assume is for condensation. What temp are they running at, and where do you get your live stock?

I had the tanks and sump made from 1" thick acrylic to prevent sweating.
I currently run the tanks at 55 - 56 F.
Most of the fish are from Tasmania.....everything else I collected from diving in Puget Sound.
