Steve...thank you VERY much for the info as well as pics. Much apprecitated.

Where did you do the research on the specimens you got. I imagine it's harder to find info, but is it REALLY hard?

Great system! Seriously!

Not a great pic of the crinoid since he doesn't like light too much.

What about routine maintenance?

What kind of substrate and flow do you have.

How about the LR did you get it your self? Did you use Fiji?

Bulb temps? And wattage?

I think it is fantastic that you have kept a crinoid for over a year not to mention as well that it has actually grown.

Do you have any plans to up grade your system and and make an "acceptable" show tank?

In your opinoin, is it possible for your your average hobbiest to set a cold water system up and be successful?

I am very interested in doing one if it is feasable. Maybe I will move to portland for some hands on training.

What an experiement. And to think that I was jealous of the people down in Florida who can collect their own ricordeas and such.

1) the routine maintenance is....empty skimmer cup.....feed.... clean glass once or twicw a week....water change once a month....that's it.

2) I use a darker calcium carbonate sand that replicates Puget Sound somewhat. Flow is the return pump...which is a single sequence 2000gph pump that supplies both tanks. I also have a single Tunze in each tank blowing under the rocks to keep waste from collecting.

3) The rock is from Puget Sound. It is a dense, granite-like rock that provides minimal biological. I have some bioballs in the overflow to serve that function. I also have quite a bit of oysters in lieu of rocks too.

4) lighting is irrelevent. I normally just run two T5's over each tank....more for photo taking. Wattages are like 39watt bulbs over the big tank and 24 watt bulbs over the small tank.

5) No plans yet for setting up a more conventional set up.....although....I am toying with the idea of turning my main 850 gal reef to cold.

6) cold systems are easier and far more forgiving if water quality lacks than any warm water reef....the main hurdle is getting stock.

If I am remembering correctly the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has a couple cold water tanks set up. I think they also have a cold water petting pond set up.

Steve are you really leaning towards turning the show tank to cold? You know if you and I both did it would be fun to go collecting, however who would pay for Travis house and cars if were not around?
