What brands of sand is everyone using?

Are you sure you want to do the sand, In the long run you would be better off going bare bottom.

i like the caribsea indo-pacific livesand. it costs a little more, but looks great, and not much of an algae bloom due to it either! check out my sig to get an idea of what it looks like

why? If you don't have sand won't you not have a lot of benificial bacteria?

In many situations, sand can become a storage grounds for wastes. Long term, this storage facility will reach a limit, at which point it can start to release wastes back into the water column. This is kind of an over simplification of what really happens, so if you want more details, check out these threads;
