Type Of Water

GUYS,
WHAT TYPE OF WATER SHOULD I BE USING WHEN DOING WATER CHANGES AND REFILLING MY TANK DUE TO EVAPORATION LOSS, I HAVE BEEN USING REGULAR TAP AND PUTTING CLORINE REMOVER IN THAT WATER. MY TANK IS DOING VERY WELL, BUT I DONT HAVE ANY REAL FISH IN THE TANK BESIDES SOME BLUE DANZLERS

Bigreal78,

I'm by no means an expert, but you can let tap water sit out in the sun to disipate clorine. Cloramides are a different story. You should check with your local water department to see which chemical they use.

I use RO/DI, it pretty darn good quality water. Also, your LFS should have premixed seawater.

Personally I would not use Tap Water for Top-Off or Water Changes! Here is a good link to sites on water quality. Johnny

FWIW, Hommeworks, I don't believe it is necessary to have the tap water out in the sun. Cl will leave solution regardless, there is enough kinetic energy at room temperature for it overcome atmospheric pressure.
Hey, I might be saving you some back trouble down the road

Chlorine will break down in sunlight or on exposure to atmoshere, if I recall my basic chem( I suk at it) Usually 24 hrs thit ariation will drive most of it off, but as stated it wont deal with chloramines or some of the other nasty stuff added to typical mun water supplies.
For a swim tank( fish only) adding a basic neutralizer and airiating(sp) will prolly do the trick, but for reef dwelling inverts its false economy to not provide the best source water possible(ie RO/Di and good salt mix). Most of the time tap water in a reef tank will result in probs somewhere down the road

I have to agree with Doug.. Sunlight will break down clorine itself but will do nothing about the other contaminates in the water.. I use RO water only for my own reasons which may or may not be correct.. The majority of folks it seems to use RO/DI water and report nothing but excellent results.. Good luck..
