Tunicates vs. Sponges

We recently had a discussion about these things and it was posited that they were the same.

The short answer is they are not related, tunicates are complex animals, sponges are not.

The easy way to tell them about is that tunicates will be able to close their siphons very quickly whereas sponges are unable to close them or close them very slowly.

Hope this helps anyone trying to figure out the difference. If you want more, I can always post the long answer but figured this would suffice for most people.

Where was it posted that they were the same?

You are right they are not nearly the same. Tunicates are chordates. In their early life stage they are bilaterally symmetrical and have a backbone.

In fact the tree of life is like this In the kingdom of animals there are porifera (sponges)

Also in animals are the cnidarians which also contains anthoza (anemones, hard and soft corals)

Also in animals are the group bilateria, which contains deuterostomia, which contains the phylum chordata.

In the phylum chordata there is the group urochordata which are the tunicates.

Ok and we humans are from the genus homo, which is in the group catarrhini, who are part of primates, who are part of eutheria, who are part of mammalia, who are part of therapsida, who are part of synapsida, who are part of amniota, who are part of terrestrial vertebrates, who are part of sarcopterygii, who are part of gnathostomata, who are part of vertebrata, who are part of craniata, which is another group in chordata.

Whew, it isnt just kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species anymore.
