I'm surprised that the breaker would trip that quickly even if you're going over the total amperage for the circuit. Do you have any way to check the actual amp draw for the pump?

Casey,
What size is the breaker that is tripping? What other things on this circuit? (ie. appliances, lighting etc.)

That is small. If the wire is big enough you could go with a 15 or 20 amp breaker but you would need to make sure the wire size is big enough before you do that. Know an electrician?

It is a 10 amp breaker, which is definitely small if it is the only circuit dedicated to your aquarium. You could put a larger breaker in, if your panel load can handle it. Is this outlet on a GFI? How many amps is your panel it should say on the sticker inside the door of the panel? (It should probably be like a 150 or 200)

It says 200 amp on the sticker inside the box
It does not have GFI on it but I am getting one.

That's called a tandem breaker. It's used to add a circuit when a panel is already full. I would get your electrician to check the circuit to see if you can upsize the breaker. He should also be able to check the amp draw of the pump.
I checked my entire tank circuit when all the lights and pumps were running and was only pulling 10.7 amps.

Well Casey do you have a buddy who is an electrician? If not I would probably hire someone to put in a larger breaker for you.
One more thought is the breaker might be bad. Awhile back my oven kept turning off. I thought I had a bad heating element in the oven but it ended up being a worn out breaker.
