if it is mainly on the surface, than it is just a biofilm. you should point a PH up at the water surface to break this up in order to allow the skimmer to get it.

hey Geoff... I shouldn't have to worry about this if I have the water going through the teeth of an overflow, right?

not necessarily. if the water level in the overflow is not a bit lower than the water level in the tank, the film will not actually leave the tank. the water will flow through the teeth under the scum.

same thing happens to me, I put a powerhead at the top of the tank aiming up to move/dispurse the stuff,
whats weird is it seems to be worse after I dose the calcium chloride and baking sode, its not crystalizing in the column but I can't help but notice the film seems to coinside with the dosing.

I guess this could have started at the top of the tank but when I saw it is was floating in the water column. It looked like little wisps of smoke or saran wrap blowing around and the foxface was eating it.
