Topping Up

I am just curious as to your evap. rates. How often do you have to top up? I am asking because I just set up my 75 its been running for a couple days, so far I have had to put in about 4 - 5 cups of water per day, or else my pump would run dry? is this normal? My other tanks barely needed one top up in a week, and only of about 1 cup.

I have a 50 with a 20 gallon sump and I am topping off exactly 1 gallon each day.

i am in the gallons on my system. i tend to pull out about a gallon of skimmate alone. with a large 50g sump and the surface area on the 125g i am sure it is a couple of gallons a day.

ah .. so its normal then. Ok, with that being said, why do water changes every week then? With all that new water going in there could you not get away with once a month?

because when you top off you are hopefully just using plain RO/DI water and when you do water changes it is with freshly made salt water.. thus replenishing any elements that are needed.

I have been topping up with salt water. When you have to top up with that much water, will it not bring your salinity down?

when salt water evaporates it leaves behind the salt salt does not evaporate... so when it evaporates..the SG rises...if you continue to topoff with salt water your SG will keep rising. topping off with fresh RO/DI is keeping your SG stable.... does this make sense??? I would stillcheck my SG regularly because with vigorous wet skimming your SG could very likely eventually become lower...THEN you could top off with salt water a couple of times to bring it back up...

haah I hope so too! ... I topped my other tanks with plain RO water so I never had any issues, but this tank is bigger, and evaps such larger amts. I just happen to have som extra salt water from when I filled it so I was dumping that in. Its ok though because its only at 1.024 and the tank I am moving everything from is at 1.027 so it can go up a point or 2 anyways.

...but yes, thank you thank you thank you .... I would have run into issues for sure down the road if you had not told me this.

Jenni is right, you definitely want to top off with fresh water (unless you skim very wet, in which case you can remove some salt with the water removed).

I've a 58 gallon tank, and I think I remove about 1-2 gallons per day, but I use evaporation for cooling. I have an auto topoff plumbed through a kalkreactor, and so I never have to interface with the top off.

I add about 2 gallons a day on my 75 gallon with a 20 gallon sump, and maintain the level in the sump at about 15-16 gallons at all times, but i skimm very wet!. I get about 1/2 to a gallon of green Tea every 24 hours
Brent.

I get about a gallon of skimmate a every 2 days so every second or third day I top off with salt water. Otherwise I just use about a gallon of RO a day.
