topping off water


I know we shuld use RO water for top off each day ( I evap. about a gallon each day) but what about water changes? Use RO or salt water for that?

This is one of those things that makes perfect sense once you've been reefing awhile, but is easy to mix up early on.

Top off water is replacing what has evaporated. Thus, use RO (unsalted) water, as the salt from the evaporated water is still in the system.

Water changes involve removing water that has salt in it. So, replace that with salted water.

If you're ever unsure, check your salinity. If it's higher than you want, dilute it with RO unsalted. If it's just right, just replace with salted.

(Why is it that every time I type "unsalted" the only thing springing to mind is butter?)

you also want to use RO water as the base for your salt water mixes for your water changes.

all i can think of are pretzels.
