Why not run a piece of pvc down to the bottom and have a "T" on the end, to help disperse the water and maybe stop the noise.

I don't think you can count the "return" pump as "additional" to the tank-turn-over rate. There is no way you can get that much water out of the tank and back up - except using a closed loop, that has to go to the skimmer or fuge.. I think this is where most people make the mistake of trying to get the turn-over rate, from the return pump.

Pumps should never be restricted, the first idea of "T" ing it off back to the sump is the best way. With a restriction in the hose or valve - you are just adding "more" work for the pump and there by shorting the life of it.

you could also just use a micron bag - filter sock type thing over the end of the pipe to trap debris instead of a filter pad.

LID

If I run a 1 in vinyl tubing down into the sump and T it at the end, should I even use the lid anymore? If I should use the lid why?

Alright, this is what I have done so far. I took the lid off, ran the tubing into the water where it T's. I'm getting a lot of girgling from it because of the air in the the line coming up to the surface. Ideas???

there are two main sources of water noise in a system. one is at the overflow end and the other is in the sump. both can be stoped using the same method. i have Dursa standpipes at both ends of my wife's system. instead of the pipe ending in a T parallel to the waters surface. make the T at a 45 degree angle just above the waters surface. then run a piece of PVC from the T under theate a couple of inches. cap off the other end of the T with a cap with a 1/8" hole in it. what this does is release the air that is being traped in the pipe with the least amount of noise.
