Too big a heater?
Is having a heater that is much larger than normal for a tank ok? We have a 55g but it might be 50 degrees or so when winter comes in our cabin. I was thinking a 200W titanium just to be sure.

Yes, i would upgrade for sure. I hope you have an acrylic tank or your gonna lose a ton of heat.

The best thing to do is have 2 small heaters in case one heater goes crazy then it won't cook your tank.
My titanium cooked my tank a few times, now I have an ebo jaeger.
I guess using a controller with your heater would be the best solution.

Much better. My acrylic tanks dropped maybe 1-2 degrees at night whereas my glass went more like 5-6 on bad nights. Acrylic is a much better insulator=less wear on your heater.

Also good to have two incase the one dies you still have the second one to keep the temp up.

I agree that the two or three smaller wattage ones are better then one large one just for the reason if the one fails You have the back up of the others and if it sticks on won't fry You tank.

Two it is then. Guess I will put the good quality bigger new one a degree higher then the stock one can come on to back it up if things get cold.
Thanks again for the advice!

hmmm. I have Won pro heat II titanium for 2 years now and temp is acurate to the tenth. Just bought another and used it in the 55 gallon hospital and this stuff is acurate. guess anything can fail but I have had good luck. I see no need for 2 but i guess in the case of complete failure that would be good.

okay...I'm not the only crazy one then. NO where in your post do you mention anything about 50° being too cold for you or your family.
You're MAIN concern is the fish.
And I RESPECT that!!!
Not a day has gone by this summer, where the wife-to-be hasn't complained about how friggin' cold our house is! And I tell her, "Honey...but the tank will overheat if I don't have the A/C on full blast...you know that."
And she nods her head in irritation, goes upstairs, and puts on the thickest sweater she owns....in August....with temps outside in the mid 90°.
I feel you man!
