I skipped the stands. I put egg crate on the bottom, put the rock on that for gripping and stability, and then added sand from there. I have had no problems with husbandry, and the rocks are solid. Plus it looks the most natural, which for me is extremely important.

You can raise the rock and have it never be noticed. Why take a chance of a rock slide due to digging creatures? I voted Yes..nessesary
