Most animals like anemones, and LPS's like open brains, will swell up when the light is not intense enough. With these new Elegance corals they swell up and retract their tentacles when the light is to strong. I have tested this several times with several different individuals. They can react like this within seconds of being placed under bright lights. When removed the swelling will begin to go down. Unfortunately, it seems that after such an exposure the coral is damaged. The extent of damage seems to relate to the duration and intensity of the exposure. In most cases they can recover from this damage if given the proper environment to do it in. I have 8 Elegance corals that I have put through the ringer. I am no longer testing these corals. Now I am just implementing what I have learned and trying to get 8 large beautiful corals out of this. I have killed 3 corals while doing tests on them. I don't feel I need to do this anymore. I would love to be able to share what I have learned over the past year and a half, and to show pics of my corals as they improve.
I do want to caution people though. These are not corals for the new person to the hobby. Even more experienced hobiests that don't have the time to dedicate to these corals in the first few months should avoid them. It can be alot of work bringing these corals through.

that makes sense and is kinda what i thought alot of the problem might be with them. too much light... they used to be considered easy corals back when vho was the latest and greatest. keeping something alive for a year was also considered success back then though!! welcome to trt, im definately interested in hearing what u have to say.

Even in the shade at the bottom of the tank, the elegance would get rather large. Could this have caused the tissue to rip, allow the insides(tho they looked and acted like worms) to come thru, then slowly it just faded away. I have one small frag left, if it has survived the weekend while I am away I may move it to the sump to see how it does.

When you say it got really big, what do you mean? Can you describe it? Did it appear swollen with small tentacles?
In my experiance it seems that after one of these corals has been burnt they are very prone to these holes in their tissues. I'm not sure why, and I have guessed at this on another sight and got flamed for taking a stab at it. So I'll leave that part out for now. It doesn't take much to puncture the tissue after the coral has been burnt. The first one that I lost was due to a banded coral shrimp walking across it. Every time the shrimp would put his little pointed feet down on the coral it would poke a hole in it. These worms you described, were they small, white, and curled up? If so, I have seen this with several of my corals. In every case there was someone in the tank causing the damage. After removing all the fish, shrimp, and hermits I quit having this problem. After one of these corals have healed form the burns they recieved, I believe this will no longer be a problem. It is only durring the healing stage that this becomes a problem.

I will be posting pics in the other thread that jy13131 started. Its the one with the long title about Elegance corals. Something like, "Thinking of getting an Elegance, any experts around", or something like that.

Interesting topic. I had one about, oh, 6 years ago. It did "ok," but never thrived. It also sort of poofed up, the tentacles got very short and stubby and it just sort of existed for about a year - but never grew any. Eventually, it withered and died like most do. I am interested to read your experiences.
And yes, we try to be a helpful, friendly bunch.
