To Jawfish or Not To Jawfish

There is a bluespot jawfish at the store that I work at that nobody has bought. He has been there for ages, and I adore that fish. Just georgous. The owner said I could have it for $50 instead of $150 since it doesn't look like anyone will ever buy it.

So my question is about the tank it would potentially go in. The only tank that is 'jumper proof' that I own is a stock 14g aquapod. As of right now the tank just has some frags that I am growing out. No fish and some snails. I see recommend minimum tank size being 20g for any jawfish. I don't really understand this so that is why I am asking. Since he will not get large and is going to stay in/near/around his hole would it be irresponsible to put him in this 14g tank?

It is quite a deal, but this is the only tank I own that he wouldn't be able to jump out and I know that they will find the smallest hole possible and jump out of it.

Thanks for the input.

Your 14g should be ok. They just tend to be fairly nervous and like the extra space. If he's gonna be in there by himself he should do alright. Just make sure you cover ANY holes in your cover! Even if its super tiny. I've seen them squeeze through holes as small as 1/2cm!

With just frags, go for it. Just make sure he has a sandbed deep enough for him (3" min) and then make extremely sure that the canopy is secure so he can't jump. At 50 dollars, that isn't a deal, it's a steal

That would almost be worth the drive for me now that gas prices have dropped.

It will definitely appreciate a bunch of rubble to build its fortress out of. I am assuming since he has been in the shop this long you already know what he is eating and everything is good there.

Picked him up today. Eating everything even flake. Has made himself a nice burrow and seems to be doing great. I will post some pictures as soon as I can get one. Quite camera shy.

I got a jaw fish for the same price. had him in the same tank. had being the key word. make something to stick over the back openings in the aquapod. meaning the three chambers in the back. they can jump back their, and lose the battle to the return pump. I learned the hard way just passing this along.

I luv my bsjf best of all my fishies. But you are warned - if he can find a way out, he will. Eggcrate does not work. They nestle in for a few weeks, and then curiosity gets them. Seal that baby well. I myself made a very cool "cover" in which I use screen around the side of my light fixture. Think of the letter "A" where the line in the middle is the waterline. Lets in air, doesn't block light, and bounces him back in if he decided to jump.
