To Fuge or Not to Fuge...tis the question?
So this whole "turf" discussion (for those that have been reading it), got me to thinking about algal filtration again...a little background, I've run various types of algal filtration in the past (most recently was a fuge with a variety of macro), but pretty much moved on from there a while back and converted my fuge to a frag tank.
So the question...who actually runs some type of algal filtration (IE. turf, fuge, what have you)? and do you really think it's benefits are worth the additional maintenance over say something like running GFO in a reactor for P reduction?
Not looking to start another war here, just wondering what various peoples approaches are. Personally, I've found over time that most algal filters become more of a headache than they are worth and my time/efforts are better spent elsewhere.

not looking to start a war you say??
hmmph!
I dont think a well set up tank needs GFO, and Im not sure what a refugium even is....oh wait...I just googled it......
re·fu·gi·um /rɪˈfyu dʒi əm/Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ri-fyoo-jee-uh m]Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -gi·a /-dʒi ə/Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[-jee-uh]. a dirty nasty area in which people with too small of skimmers and not enough positive flow in which they can suspend organics for their skimmer to permanently remove incorporate into their systems in an effort to SUPPOSEDLY eat up more of these excess nutrients missed by their skimmer than it releases
Ive never seen such a run on sentence in a dictionary before......weird.......

I currently run no algal scrubbers but have used a horizontal system in the past (with mixed results). As for refugium I don't currently run one. While I believe that macroalgae could be used effectively for nutrient maintenance, I view them more as a refuge to increase biodiversity. Like culturing mysis or gammarus shrimp in a safe area so they are never completely wiped out. JMO

So what dose it mean when you can't grow macro in you fuge ? Is the water to clean or are you doing something wrong or RIGHT ?

Too funny Mr. Fly!!!
You're probably right on the GFO, I just like the idea of having a little bit running to take up any P that may be lingering around in the hopes that it won't get absorbed in other places, and the fact that it will absorb some other nasties that might inadvertently get in the water.

So, on to hijack my own thread...OK, just a little, it's still a little on topic.
I saw this earlier today and found it very interesting. He does run a "fuge" (sorry Fly), but I have to say the growth on his Macro is very sorry indeed, LOL!
Tanks:
Main tank 220g, 44g fuge and 23g sump.
Filtration:
NO SKIMMER
220lbs of Live Rock (1 pound per gallon)
0-1" Sand bed using 0-2mm sand
2" Sand bed in Fuge
Lighting:
T5 - 16x T5 Bulbs using 2x ATI powermodule (ATI Blue+ and Arcadia Marine White bulbs staggered configuration).
Flow:
Ocean Runner 3500 return
Tunze Stream 12000 on a single controller
Tunze 7410 pump on a wave-box.
Supplements:
30g weekly water change
Runs Carbon 24/7 every 30 days passively
Balling Method (like 2-part but more advanced)
Iron, strontium, Lugols solution.
Parameters:
Temp: 78F (runs T5 so doesnt need a chiller)
Salinity: 35ppt

Have to read the text not just look at the pictures, LOL!
It's 30G every week, which equates to about 14%. As one person put it, that tank is the product of perfect husbandry.
Oh, BTW...where around SGF are you...my wife has a bunch of family down that way?

Belongs to Marko Haaga...he had TOTM at reefkeeping.com back in 2003...but it looked a bit different then and had a skimmer, LOL! He may of had TOTM somewhere else since...I'd vote for him!

Very good...she has some relatives actually in SGF, but most are to the north of town in the Marshfield and Fairgrove areas.
