To feed or not to feed, that is the question?

After my tank cycled, I had a very small outbreak of brown algae on the sand and green algae on the glass and rock. Very slight. My clean up crew has gotten rid of the brown, and some green algae remains. I understand different snail eat different algaes. So........do i need to feed some of the snails? What do i feed them? Also, when all the algae is gone do you feed the clean up crew or will they live on what ever they find. I have no fish yet. Also, since my tank is new should i be feeding the DSB?

I am worried this stuff may starve because i have no fish waste, and no fish to feed at this point.

Clean up crew:
1 fighting conch
20 nassarius snails
10 baja snails
10 trochus snails
5 turbo snails
1 sally lightfoot
2 red leg hermits

Thanks.

The 20 nassarius snails will definitly need to be fed. They are carion eaters, so unless you have dead fish or critters in your tank you'll need to provide food. Flake food will be fine for them until you add fish and start feeding the tank more.

And yes, it is a good idea to add a pinch or two of flake every couple days when establishing a DSB.

Good luck,
Dan

I would second that, feed a little bit of food every few days, nothing much. Sounds like it is moving along.

Snails love to eat Nori, the sushi seaweed wrapper sheets that is commonly fed to tangs and other herbivorous fish. Take a small piece and rubberband it to a rock and the snails will pig-pile on it and munch away
