tiny bubbles

we have alot of very tiny bubbles in our tank, all over (i think it is some kind of algee) .. what is it and where does it come from and how do we get rid of it ?? 110 gallon reef tank ... we tried to "clean" it by scraping it but it all comes back with in a day or so .....

Are the bubbles green? Sounds like bubble algae. Dont try to remove it in the tank as it will spread. You can take the rock out piece by piece and remove the bubbles then swish the rock in old water from the , when you do a water change. Also emerald crabs will eat it. I had some come in on some tonga and my emeralds ate it in no time. HTH

cynobacteria - most of the time i will cover different areas in a tank . its usually a deep red color mat , usually the result of a pocket of high nutrients . it is also refered to as red slime algae . sometimes it appears stringy . but air bubbles are common .

how long has your tank been set-up ? if not long there may not be much you can do , except keep on siphoning it out . eventually it runs its course as long as you don't add to the problem , like over feeding , something dieing , bad tap water ,etc. first thing is to think about what changes you have made ,and also has it been a slow build-up or noticeable quickly , like a week or so . water changes may also help . don't get dicouraged , you will beat it !

Algae needs something to eat (ie nitrates and phosphates). Take away the nutrients and it will slowly disappear! Good luck!

the tank has been set up for over 1 year ... it seemed to come on in the last 2 weeks .. it could be over feeding ?? we used filtered water .. no other changes .. should i add some crabs in addition to water changes ?? i am worried because it is starting to cover my corals and it seems to be killing them ...

Overfeeding will do it, yes. So will water change water that isn't devoid of impurities.

tank is a year old... how old are your bulbs? There could be a million reasons why it just "started" to show up... the fun is determining what "may" of caused it and correcting the problem. A tank at one year is a good time to re-evaluate your practices and methods of maintenance.
