For some of my tanks I use one of these outdoor timers... I like it in the fact it has never failed me and has a cover to go over the actual plugs. It makes me feel safer. I think I remember finding them for less money though but a similiar model at homedpot or lowes.

For my main reef tank I use an aquacontroller jr.

I just got a cheap 3 prong one at Home Depot,.. If you are running PC, T5, or VHO lighting they will be fine.

If you are running a tun of MH then you need to come up with something better,.. My 3*250W MH fried 2 timers before I found a $40 one that worked lol.

I'm with Whiskey, I'm using a simple timer from Home Depot, it looks like a dial and has a 24 hour clock on it. You put these little things in there to turn stuff on or off. It costs about $7 and I think it's called a "heavy duty appliance timer".

The ones I have now are MarineLand brand Aquarium Light Timers. Rob's sells them, about 12 bucks. You can find them at Walmart also in the Pet Section (hint). They are easy to set. I don't like the time resolution on them though, only in 15 minute intervals. And, hard to get an exact time set on it because of the way you set the time of day.

I had the same ones TitusFan has, I think I got them at Walmart for about $10.00 each.

They worked well

i get the digital timers from Home Depot... easy to set, and accurate... i don't like the basic "clock looking" timer with the little prongs you have to move to set them. to me they aren't as accurate to set, and mine is easier to turn on manually.. i just touch a little button... but to each their own, the basic ones work, but i like to functionality of the digital ones. also the digital ones have battery back up and don't lose time when the power goes out randomly...
