Time to buy an RO unit (United Kingdom)

Big Hello to everyone again,

Ive kinda been thinking that well its really going to need to be done and thats to buy an RO unit for the flat so that I can do water changes and top ups as per and when I want to. I surely cant keep going to my local aquarium shop to keep filling up this 25 Litre plastic container.

Now Ive been looking on ebay and a few other places.

Ive got a 300Litre tank and have been told that a 25 litre RO water change every week is best but from my position on here just now that seems alot especially if everything is going just nicely. Tanks been set up for just over 8 weeks.

Firstly theres this place

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/First-Stop-...QQftidZ2QQtZkm

and then theres pretty much the rest of the web that u can search for. In question Im asking should I just go down to my local aquarium and ask then although there ro unit will be much much bigger.

and if not then some advise on how many cylinders etc etc should I be asking for. I see that they are rated in GPD gallons per day and for a 300 litre tank what would I be looking at.

Its just a quick topic really as I know it will get to a point where that I will want one simply to save money. Its working out up here in sunny Scotland @ around £3 for 25 litres .

So what do you girls and guys have to say ???

Juan

P.S tanks coming along lovely

What I would recomment is a 4 stage (at least) which would include a sediment, carbon, reverse osmosis, and deionization resin. Units with more stages simply add another carbon ar maybe a carbon and a second DI resin. One place that a lot of people get them from over here is Air Water Ice. What ever unit you get all of the membranes are interchangable between brands. The RO membrane is where some of the cheaper units cut cost. Most people use filmtec RO membranes that I know of. RO membranes could last anywhere from say 1-5 years depending on how bad the tap water is.

You want to get a TDS (total disolved solids) meter as well to monitor when the membranes need to be replaced. Inline meters are very handy and allow you to monitor the TDS at 2 points. I measure after RO and after DI. This tells me when the RO is getting bad and the TDS starts incresing as well as when the DI is exausted and can't keep the output at 0 TDS.

Looks like you are about 75 gallons in your 300L tank, I would go for a 75gpd unit. It is always nice to have a unit that can give you a little more water than you need on a day to day basis in case of an emergency.

mg,

Very nicely said. I will email your thread to the unit producers and see what they have to say. At the end of the day its much better to have your own RO unit and to be able to see for your self like most things whats actually being given to you for your tank.

The unfortunate thing is just from the ebay link I gave above it doesnt show any of these so its not something im gonna jump out and buy too quickly until Ive covered everything uve mentioned.

Everyone agree ???

Something like this will work fine

http://www.airwaterice.com/product/1TYPHOON

I also like having clear canisters so you can see when the sediment and carbon filters are getting real dirty.
