"thorns" on rock

I have been over run with little "thorns" all over my rock. They are obviously some type of work but dang, these things are all over with the exception of well lit areas. They are about a/4" or so and thin, about the same diameter as the small feather dusters you see in the rock. I have yet to see any sign of an animal in them but there has to be something.
Any ideas?

Small vermetid snails maybe. Are they the tiny purple looking ones? You usually don't see much of a feeding web from the small ones.

Most are white but they vary with the rock. Little suckers hurt too. You mentioned web, I have sen a few particles very close stuck in some kind of strand or something. If this is in fact what they are, is there anything to be concerned bout other than they are ugly and a pain?

They can make handling the rocks a painful experience as the tubes can be sharp. I break them off when I see one but you have to be sure to get all of the base. They won't get out of hand unless you have a large amount of food particles floating around. Reportedly, large hermits will break off the tubes and eat them but I'm not a hermit crab fan so I can't confirm this.

I also read that when there are too many of them and/or when they get too big, they can irritate corals arround them.
The net will just rub and rub on the coral repeatedly.

A gliding squirrel at that! I was thinking that the things you're talking about are hydroids. They're spikey, too, and not a good thing in your tank.

Sorry you have them... I'm actually surprised that they are exploding in your high-flow, BB, LNS... They do sort of explode and then the numbers subside. Although even when they are dead you have the shells left... I have a scar on my forehead from one...

My last experience with a population explosion of them in a frag tank involved breaking down the tank completely. I removed/discarded all the rock and sand. Filled the tank and sump with water and vinegar and ran that for a few days. Then drained and cleaned it all out. Filled with RO/DI and ran that for a few days before adding salt again.

I have always had an occasional one here or there in my tanks and never paid much attention to them. For some reason, they absolutely exploded in this new setup. They even covered all the wires for the pumps and every bit of eggcrate and pvc in the tank. Have never seen anything like it before.

Other than large hermits possibly eating them or removing all food sources, I don't think there are any easy cures.
