Question

This might be stupid questions but..

Seeing that I dont currently own a tank yet and im trying to read about what my setup should be im curious on a few things..

1. Does the room the tank is in smell like some LFS??

2. How humid and how much heat do these tanks give off into the room. I dont need my living room to turn into a greenhouse type invironment.

I have found that it all depends... most of us are used to the smell that we don't notice it. I don't think that there is that much smell from a tank especially if it is taken care of well. A large tank can everaporate a lot of water but I don't think that it makes the room like a greenhouse. We live in the north where one can get a bad shock from a dry house so I like the humidity in the winter.

Hi Mark

There really shouldn't be noticeable odor from your tank, especially if you keep up on tank maintenance. If you cure live rock in your tank, it's going to smell until it cures. Mine hardly smelled at all, some people have had it smell like a sewer. If you are really concerned about odor, going with cured live rock would be your best bet. There will be odor from your skimmer collection cup and that's not pleasant but as long as you empty it regularly and especially if it's in an under-the-tank sump in a closed stand, you shouldn't smell that in the room.

As far as "the green house effect", well, it is going to heat up the room a little and you will notice some humidity but it's not bad by any means. I don't have air conditioning in my house and when I come home and the house has been closed up all day it's definitely time to open a window but I don't feel as if I've stepped in to a sauna or greenhouse. The bigger the tank, the bigger the effect, however.

Hope this helps,

~Alice

Yep ditto on the above. If your tank stinks...something isn't right. Now the skimmer collection cup is another story, but like Alice said..empty it regularly and it won't stink up the house. We never have any condensation on the windows from our 135g.

I agree with all of the above. We don't notice a smell. The humidity and heat are minimal. When we have guests in our house, they often comment that it smells like they are lying on the beach next to the ocean. They say it is kind of relaxing. You will quickly get used to any smell that your tank puts off. If you smell something bad, that means you have problems.

hello,

i would think that its like people who own dogs and cats that are in the house, you dont notice it after time, but others might. plus like as said above by people with more experience than i, if your tank is clean it shouldnt reek.

HTH

good luck
