Not just for the aquariums. They catch grouper that way as well. I was reading that for every grouper caught with cyanide, about 3 yards of coral reef is wiped out because the cyanide is not discriminatory. Also the grouper populations are being wiped out because the size fish that is prized by restaurant patrons is also roughly the size of a grouper that is approaching sexual maturity but has not had the chance to spawn yet. Couple that with a certain status associated with buying an expensive fish for your dinner guests and the typical laws of supply and demand cease to work. In other words the more rare they become, the more expensive they get, and the more status a restaurant patron achieves by buying it for his guests and subsequently more demand. It will be a sad day when these fish are wiped out. I always wonder what I can do about it other than gripe and get depressed but I always come up with nothing. I guess I don't have the imagination to come up with solutions to these problems.

Leave the imagining to the evil people in the group.

Put together a nice flier that describes the process and what it is doing to the reefs (and the world). Put a little spot at the bottom for as signature and a quote that says "I choose not to order this menu item because of the methods used to capture it.", and start handing them out. Stand on the sidewalk (public property), and hand them to people that are entering the restaurant.

It is a very calm method of delivering information, and legal (well, call the local police department and verify - it's just a calm way of picketing, but you may need a permit of some sort).

But it leaves the store with signed copies of THEIR customers telling their opinion. And the store will feel the pain if they have a bunch of fish going bad. And when the supplier asks why they aren't ordering any more... maybe they will change, too?

Eh...

Reed the chapter on this in the book "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist".

It is a truly sad practice, and permanatly damages the fish as well, so you get a fish that won't eat, and when it finally does it dies.

Really makes me wonder about those fish I had 20 yrs ago that just dies with out any apparent reason.

one thing to keep in mind... not all fish are caught this way. in developed countries this is not the case.

this is mainly a result of poor training for catching fish.

dont buy fish that are caught with cyanide....if at all possible ask your LFS about how there stock is caught...and do research on what to look for when identifying cyanide symtoms in fish

I don't think anyone WANTS to buy Cyanide Captured fish....but we JUST don't know HOW the fish in our tanks were obtained, nor how long they have been in captivity. Cyanide is NOT the ONLY reason fish die! Sometimes there are jsut things wrong with a fish that we cannot see.

The best trick is to only buy fish from places where they never use the stuff. Hawaii, and some of the better developed south sea islands...

So true, which is why the best route and only way to really know is to buy tank raised fish.

Same goes with corals - with them, there really is no excuse not to buy aqua or mari-cultured. (or buy aussie) With fish the selection of tank raised is pretty slim (clowns and a few others). Almost all corals are available in some enviro-friendly form.
