Question

thinking of upgrading my lighting

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking of upgrading my lighting on my 90g, currently I am running a 40w NO 50/50 bulb and a 40W actinic bulb. My LFS has a sale on a new light product, not sure of the name but I think it is Aqua lights. This is basically the same setup as the smartlamps. The complete light setup is 120 bucks, it has 2 65w 50/50 bulbs. I want a little more light in my tank but not sure if this will be a good idea. Does anybody think I will have an algae breakout? I will not be making a big jump in watts and was wondering if adding 50 more watts will be a problem. My system has been running excellent for 6 months and not sure if I can deal with a breakout . The only algae problem I have had was a little cyano on my CC bed. I have not had a trace of hair algae and very little to zero green algae. I get some diatom buildup but really nothing to talk about. I only run my glass cleaner around about once every 4 days. Sorr for what seems like a long post.

Thanks,

You may have a bit of an algea outbreak, but nothing serious. Sometimes when I replace a VHO bulb(1 of the 4 every 3 months), I will notice an increase of algae. If you get those new lights, which sounds like a pretty fair deal, I would start off by shortening your photo-period a little. Maybe by 2 hours a day. Then in a week add an hour, then one more week and add the last hour back on. It may not be necessary for a smaller increase, but just to be on the safe side that's what I would do. One of the OFR might tell you no problem keeping it the same(and listen to them too they know more than myself).
