I think thats a good alternative. If it wasnt for the cost, I think more people would/should use that. Its not necessarily right that we steal live rock from the ocean for our reef tanks, I mean its basically wrong. But I do it like everyone else, so Im not really one to talk. Thats definitely a step towards "responsible reefing". That doesnt seem to have an ileffect on the marine life anywhere, unlike our live rock. Hopefully our hobby doesnt get too big where the oceans are just totally depleted of Coral, live stock and rocks....

the LR we get is aquacultured anyway. most of it is farmed on land than dumped into the ocean to be seeded. they can only farm from certain areas that they own. not that big of a deal. the worst part about it is that the LR comes from lagoonal areas instead of the active reef parts. this means we are already fighting an uphill battle with the phosphates. have you ever wondered why you never see SPS colonies on LR?

Geoff, I was totally unaware that the rock we have is usually aquacultured. I just recall seing some sheisty looking sites of people diving in the keys or PR or wherever, holding up a big huge chunk of rock. So I figured it all was just taken from the ocean... how the heck do you aquaculture LR anyhow.

true live rock is still being collected / harvested in fiji, tonga, etc ( south pacific) .
this happens in rotating reef zones , after storms , and by locals , ect.
sites are shifted ( when dealing with reputable , environmental consious companies).

look at these tidal zones

the problem is, the LR is still collected on the "easy" side of the islands. this is not the best place to get LR that is not already loaded with phosphates.

as the world becomes a smaller place , and people in poorer nations take notice to emerging markets, things change -- as with the live rock trade.
the hobbie it is definetaly becoming harder in some respects, however, easier in other respects .
lets all just do our part to protect mother earth and keep our hobbie alive at the same time!!!!
thanks to all that have viewed these pics and put some thought into it!!
