They are taking over!
I have these white cottony cocoon looking things with little crowns on the end growing out of my live rock. It started as just a few but last night in looks like the biggest one exploded and now there are at least 30 tiny ones starting. I am seriously thinking about soaking the infected live rock in fresh water to kill them off.
Is there anything that will eat them? Any body else have them?
Help!

This is a tunicate.

Yes, a bit... They got longer and fuzzier over time though and then spread like wild fire. What do I do? Are they going to take over or is just a passing phase my tank is going through? Honestly, I'll bet there are at least 30 little ones in there. I don't want to just go around killing everything I'm not sure of but if the get as long as the last one then my tank is going to look horrid.
Thanks....

LOL...I have the same question as sunnyday. Here is a poor quality pic of what (I believe) we both have. They only seem to grow in areas that the clean up crew can't reach. This pic came from a new refugium I recently setup a little over a month ago. I have been letting them grow just to see what comes of them. Like flatworms they don't seem to do anything but grow in abundance on the glass.

I have some in my tank too. Starting to spread a bit. Looks like what Kevin posted, but a lot more fuzzy... and less translucent. It does almost literally look like a small fuzzy cocoon, with no distinct tentacles. I found a bunch in my wet dry, and some of the back sides of the live rock. I too am curious as to what it is?

The second picture is a glass anemone. Some people consider them pests. I had about 5 aiptasia that came with my first batch of LR. After adding 2 peppermint shrimp to my tank, the aiptasia and glass anemones were gone.
Looking at Putzer's pic, I think those are tunicates. Small, white, a little smaller than a pencil eraser? I'm pretty sure they're considered "Cryptic Zone" filter feeders. They like low light, lots of nutrients. I have quite a few of them growing inside my Remora skimmer, I think it has to do with the dark acrylic.
HTH,
Kevin

Whew... I don't feel so alone now. They multiplied over night when I added a new supplement to the water for my corals. As I have been pondering this over the last couple of days( mostly at work ) I think the sea slug was starting to eat them, but unfortunately met with an untimely death in the intake tube of the filter. It was sad.
Well thanks everyone, this is a great forum. I am so glad I happened on to it.
Have a good day, I am on nights this week so it is off to work I go.
See ya....
