The wife saga continues ... I did this
For those following the saga, here are my last two posts:
http://www.thereeftank.com/forum/sho...threadid=10833
She is leaving for the weekend starting tomorrow. I set up a ten gallon with 10 lbs LS tonight. She doesn't know anything about it and I should be able to keep it hidden in my office. This is to show her that 1) a tank doesn't smell and 2) it's fun to look at. My question on a tank this size. I can put LR (cured) in it right now I believe while it's cycling and it should help the cycle out. Can I add a couple clean up critters just to make sure there is no build up of any algae or something. The LR alone should be able to handle the spikes I thought. Patience is the key to this hobby, but I'm just wondering with such a small tank with cured LR if I should get a head start on the algae. Plus if she comes back this weekend and I can show her critters, maybe she'll start warming up to a bigger tank in the Living Room.

I have a ten gallon nano with dsb and 5# live rock. I really started to get algae after the tank was cycled, I don't remember that much building up for the first few weeks. After the tank was cycled and the algae got real thick I put in a tuxedo urchin and cleaned the place up in no time. In fact i had to keep feeding him nori and algae disks because the tank didn't produce enough algae for him to eat.

Let the thing cycle before adding cleanup crews.
Oh, and take the wife snorkeling off the reefs in the carribbean. (Cozumel is very nice, too.)
It worked for my husband...

Place some activated carbon (in a netting bag or even a makeshift bag made from unused coffee filters --just mind that the powder can make a mess) in a spot near the tank (preferrably were any evaporation might emit from and into the room), and there should be even less chance of an odor problem.
And good luck!

Odor??? We have a 125, 120, and a 10...all in the living rm/entry way/dining rm, never smelled a thing...
I can't for the life of me figure why she's against you enjoying something like this, but it's none of my business...can't get to your earlier threads since the board address changed (and I tried "forums" and it still didn't work) but she should be so grateful it's not liquor addiction, strip joints, gambling addiction, or any other huge assortment of sorry choices a partner can make in life...
I apologize if I'm being too outspoken here...
Good luck,
Shirley
P.S. - I found and read your earlier threads...

The Bottom line...
The bottom line is........And I'm surprised nobody already thought of this.....those cats(or at least that litter) smell a heck ofa lot worse than any tank. I've got a veritable zoo in my apartment. Dog, cat, reefs....and although i wouldn't say it smells like roses, i definitely think the cat litter is the biggest contributor.
Just thought...you're litter's in the basement right? oh welll.....
She'll come around. She better!
