Fish is fish. As long as it's not one of MY fish. I've eaten Naso and Unicorn tang before; it was quite tasty!

Ooohhh nnoooo! Another, 'How to eat your pet' thread.
now we just need Cyberchef's culinary skills to really get it going! My clownies are safe, but, I just found a 12"+ fireworm in my tank! Wonder if they're edible? On second thought, I've already named him, Ma'dib, so I guess he's no longer eligible!

How much meat could you get out of a Naso or Unicorn tang? It seems like it would take quite a few just for a nice sashimi appetizer .

The shop I used to work at had a 14" or so Vlamingii tang. I used to joke about frying him up....
My husband came into the shop one day with a friend of his who hails from Hawaii. The guy couldn't believe that we were keeping "food" fish in the tank LOL! He said he used to spear fish for them. Scott told him that live in a tank they are worth $400 or so. The guy's eyes nearly bugged out of his head!

Hey OB use one of them vibrating lures then hook him
For the record, no I don't advocate eating pets, but it cracks me up that americans are so squeemish about food animals with names. Then again if you ever go someplace where the dont have fast food joints its a different story. I can't understand the logic of euthanizing millions of unwanted "pets" and making it illegal for people who's culture has no problem with it, using them as food

My ancestors had one abiding principle about animals:
"Eat anything that doesn't eat you first!

One of my best friends from college grew up on a farm in middle-of-nowhere Kansas. In addition to the wheat, they raised a handful of cattle... I had the great fortune to visit once, and her mom served steak. "Ribeye," and "T-bone" (yes, those were their names) were absolutely delicious.
Guess it just depends on your culture. Look at all the escargot in our tanks...

Actually...
They get pretty big in the wild, as do most tang spp., up to 30 to 50 cm in length depending on specie.

Clownfish Sashimi?? Bet the stripe would get caught in your teeth!!
I dont mind chewing on farm animals raised for meat. Right now I have a steer hanging out waiting for his last meal toward the end of this month. His name is Dorito. I would rather die than have Floppy tar tar. (my sailfin)

Well, I don't consider myself to be 'squeemish' or a bleeding heart, but I do draw the line at eating domestic pets. I would not like to see puppy and kitty burgers become legal fare, and I think it's a crying shame that the horse market is now based on the per pound value old Nellie can bring in once the kids have outgrown her. What ever happened to retiring her to pasture for her remaining years and treating her as the beloved member of the family that she is?
If the way we Americans elevate our pets to a special protected status seems strange to other cultures, well, I for one think it is a good thing. You have to draw the line somewhere whether it is out of respect for the animals that share such an intimate part of our lives, or, even if only out of respect for our neighbors who love thier pets. How horrible would you feel if Fido (your beloved pet, or your spouses, or your childs) got out of the yard one day, and, you found him on your neighbors BBQ pit? And there was nothing you could legally do about it?
It is true, I don't feel as strongely about my coldblooded pets. After all, I have never felt any return of affection or sense of being loved from my reptile or fishy pets, however, I still would not consider a pet fish as suitable fare under any but perhaps the most dire circumstances. (and I'm not talking about exceeding my weekly grocery budget, either).
Well, I have to step down off my soapbox, not because I've finished my spiel, but, because I've run out of time and have to go to work. Darn, and I was really in a literary mood today! Oh, well. By tomorrow, I will probably have a whole differant attitude on the subject!
