The toilet in my living room!

I have a Durso/Stockman stand pipe in the overflow box for my tank in the living room. With over 500+ GPH flowing through the thing is sounds like a heavy duty toilet on steriods. I have drilled a hole in the top for an air valve (not installed yet) and played around with different size holes in the top plus duct tape over the hole and different size openings. I have shortened the pipe. I have a valve in the hose directly below the box that I have tried adjusting infinatly. If I tweek the flow to the point where the noise backs off, the tanks nearly overflows. What is the magic solution to quieting this thing down? I can hear the overflow box in the other end of the house!

JJ, do a search on this board and on RC for this type of problem. we have 2 overflows and we don't hear a thing, so I know that it will get better. Ours looks like a U at the top with the U upside down. HTH

hi there.
my lfs had the same problem when they upgraded their tanks, we solved it by feeding smaller tubes up the end of the main overflow where the water went into the sump, this stopped so much air being sucked into the hole and all went quiet!!.
you can vary the amount of pipe that you feed up the pipe to alter the speed and noise of the overflow.
it worked well,
hope that helps.

tubing

Thanks Jon,
Did the search and the one point that came up was the smsll tube inserted in the stand pipe. Andy, pretty much the same thing you were mentioning. I just inserted about a foot of 1/4" vinyl tubing in through the hole in the top of the stand pipe and while it still sucks and gurgles, definatly not as much.

I think I may make a trip to Home Depot this morning and see if they have the pieces to make the stand pipe out of 1 1/4 - 1 1/2" and re-build the thing similar to Durso's using a larger pipe. IF HD has that parts.....
