The Reef Tank's Mission

The Reef Tank is a unique bulletin board with a unique philsophy. Our mission is to provide a supportive, flame-free environment for beginning and experienced aquarists to share ideas, ask questions, and learn about the marine and reef keeping hobby. We also aim to educate ourselves and others about responsible animal husbandry, promoting captive-raised livestock and aquacultured corals when possible.

In order to facilitate that mission we have set the following guidelines for the community:

• Messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws will not be allowed. Please keep your threads free of profanity.
  
• If you are a business, please make note that commercial advertising posts are not allowed. We do encourage business owners to share their knowledge of the hobby in the forums and do allow you to place your business name and link in your signature.

Lately there has been some confusion so I want to clear it up.

Most people know that this site is geared toward family friendly sharing of hobby info. Other than being nasty to others, posting things not appropriate for kids, discussing political or religious sticky topics, and commercial posts, we are pretty flexible on the rules. We don't rule with an iron fist but we also don't allow people to continue to violate the rules either.

You'll know if you are heading the wrong direction because a moderator will let you know, and if you've been contacted about infractions you should consider adjusting your methods before more drastic measures are taken.

What I'd like to clarify though is something that is rarely stated openly. All the rules that apply to posting also apply to private messages and emailing our members. You cannot use the PM system to solicit sales, nor can you call people names, or try to provoke political arguments.

Please keep this in mind when you contact your fellow members.
