three- that is very true when dealing with sizes less than 1.25" inches. when you get bigger the game changes. the prices are all over the place. i wish the single union ball valves were not the insert type. i would be able to save a load of money there. i may end up doing the ball valve and the union in some places but in others it could be usefull to be able to take off one side of the plumbing or the other. it is wierd though, when i was priceing the 1.5" stuff. it came out cheaper to buy the true union for $13 than the ball valve $10 and a union $5. go figure.
ohh, i forgot to mention that all of those pieces in the pic were either 1.5" or 2" pieces.
i did another fire test last night also. heat will not be a problem. i had the fire on for a couple hours during War of the Worlds, liked the original better. the air under the mantle did not get above 83F. i then pulled out a test pipe that was right next to the exhaust vent i could not feel any difference along the pipe on where the exhaust was. one less major hurdle to worry about.

Tell me about it. My wife said I have more in plumbing this tank than the whole house. And they are proud of their 2" fittings.

I feel your pain on the true unions Geoff. I have even more to buy and am looking at a few hundred to do the plumbing just for expanding the system. That doesnt count redoing the already existing stuff. Plus Im going to plumb my Barracuda as 2" instead of 1 1/2". Im going to do every pump in true unions, I like the way they work and the space saving compared to a ball valve and two regular unions is significant.

Robert- right behind the tank i had to use true unions just for the length issue. even then i found out i need to move the holes in the tank a couple of inches outbound. NOTE- do not actually drill your tank untill the very last minute!!!
i did a quick calc. i need ~340' of 2" PVC!! i am hoping i can find a place that does bulk discounts. does anybody know if Lowe's has coupons.

How are you gonna get up that wall to service your sump? The ceiling is right there. Is your sump a regular tank or are you making it long and short. Looks like it could be difficult to service.

trust me it can not be any harder to service than it used to be. before, all of the components were either located behind the tank or in the crawlspace below. it. going in the crawlspace required going outside then in the crawlspace door, then crawling 50' to below the tank. to get on the mantle required a 4' step ladder. it does not look it in the pic but the mantle stands at 64". in the house it actually does not look that tall till you get closer. this will be a big improvement. the problem is that on top of the mantle is the only logical place for an aquarium.
for now i am going to put it all up on the shelf. i may in the future build a true fish room in that corner, but untill the boss figures out exactly what is going on in the basement i am playing it safe and putting all of the equipment there.
the sump will be custom made, by me. i have yet to figure out the dimension, but i have a couple of sumps that i made earlier that may fit the bill. not real worried about that part. i am just worried about the amount of plumbing.

does Casey have the day off today?
i have actually done a lot today, but nothing picture worthy, unless you like some more pics of the new holes just a little off from the old holes, which were apparantly not quite in the right spot to begin with.
i also moved the circuit that was below in the crawlspace to the new area. i now have to go down and remove all of the tiles that were left behind after the addition was added. of course they were put right where i need to plumb.

OK Geoff,
As I'm sitting here eating my daily ration of mac & cheese.... I'm wondering.... How does one afford to have a SW tank and electrostatic speakers?
