The Only 30 Gallon Hex. Build Thread

So first let me introduce myself: My name is Kevin and my goal is to do something that hasn’t been done(as far as i can tell) before (as far as a build thread goes).

As of right now all i have is the tank and a mind full of ideas so bare with me as it may take awhile for all of us to enjoy my creation.

I want to have a tank that may girlfriends daughter can look at and see something she has never seen before, but so she can also appreciate how putting time into something can be so worth it. (and so she can have a nemo, but the first part sounds better)

Right know I have a 75 gallon FOWLR tank and recaught the bug after 10 years from being away!

So now down to the knitty gritty.

I want my tank to be a show tank, it really aggravates me when i see some of the hard work that everybody has done in this forum and there tank is a wonderland located in what appears to be in there unfinished dungeon(to each there own), I feel that we should be proud of what we do and show it off where ever we can not lock it up.(sorry for the ramble)

So anyway 30 gallon hex. will be hard to do cause of the shape, biggest challenges will be light and amount of water used, so I am planning on using this as a brainstorm and would appreciate all feedback, good, bad and other...

Not to jump ahead of myself but i imagine that with a 24” deep tank and 21” x 18” width that lower light things need to be at the bottom and not try to fool myself into thinking other.

hope you all are with me and feel free to ask me questions as they come about.

And yes pictures are coming........

Kevin,
have you started a blog for this also?
Are you going to try a CLS for it? withthe angles of the glass it will be hard but i think the same angles will make the flow even better

What kind of corals do you plan to keep? That will greatly effect most of the talk from here on out as far as comming up with a good system goes.

Do you plan on a sump? It would be a good way to add needed water volume, but with the weird size of this tank nothing is going to fit under that stand easly.

Sounds like a cool project!

i have a 65gal hex tank and have had trouble with the shape and lack of space. i think lighting will be your biggest problem if u plan on a reef tank, finding something to fit on top of it, unless u go with a mh pendant will be a chore. maybe fowlr would be best if u just want a nemo! id try and get a hot skimmer(even look at nano skimmers) and maybe a fluval for in the stand.(for flow, charcoal, phosban, etc.) id also go with a dsb. thats how i would go about it, hope it helps!!

my plans i believe at this point is to go with white sand and build a flyguy extra tall stand to get the lr / coral mor toward the top/light will probally go with a sunpod 15watt mh 14000k (easier to find than 175 for the width) and for the time being was not going to go with a sump cause of the $$ but make my build easy to add on and think in the future, probally a cpr bak pak protien skimmer

i cant think of many SW fish that will thrive in an approx 20in circle....IMO you are really limited your fish choices.
