the lazy route

Well I was talking to my dad the other day and after seeing my yank he was very impressed but then nausiated as I told him what I had to do toi keep in tip-top condition. (He was afraid of all the pumps and Calcium Reactors and ect.) Well I knew he wanted an aquarium but I think I just totally turned him away from SW and since he used to have a 80 g FW planted and he loves the 30 galoon FW planted I set up in my moms office, I think thats the way we are going to go. (This is his decission you know mr I'd go SW if it was my choice)

We found a 240 gallon glass for $375 (brand new, good price?)

& I was wonderring being the aquarium junkie that I am, what is (not necessarilly the easiest but eaiset to maintain filter for a large FW aquarium) I would imagine its not that extinsive but I'm not sure what I can get away with since I'm not a FW guy........

-Adam

P.S.

took my Lifeguard test last saturday 200 people show up, 78 pass, you have 10 minutes to swim 500 yards (for non-swimmers you have to be in pretty good shape to do that), I did it in 5:48

# 1 time

I'm so stoked

thanks again Adam

Congrats on the lifeguard thing
As far as the FW planted tank, prolly minimal would be OK

Grats on the lifeguard test...this is dating me I guess but back in 1981 I tried out in Santa Barbara and it was a one mile swim in the open ocean. I played High School polo and swam AAU and still got my ass kicked by 30 people ahead of me. Where do they get you terminator swimmers?

I used a mechanical filter while getting my tank going and chucked the whole thing after two months. What works great now is two medium cheesecloth bags of floss in the sump for me, and I just throw them away every week or two (I think Geoff recommended that...thanks). They get pretty ugly..I was amazed that they would work that well. The skimmer takes care of the rest and I have a UV sterilizer hooked up to my loop to my beer fridge chiller.

This is all pretty cheap, but it made the tank that was given to me without the other stuff affordable.

You know far more about tanks than I do RUHS but this is low maintenance and works for me.

I'e always kept FW with undergravel filters. As long as you don't overstock or over feed the tank they work great. When you do a water change you stick the tube down in the gravel to get the crud out. the Amazon sowards I have have multiplied to the point I have to throw some away every couple of months when I can't see the lights anymore.

For a tank that big I would use a sump just like you would for a reef tank with the mechanical filtration in the sump. You can use fiberfloss or like stated above cheesecloth type. Cannisters are a good choice too but like I siad for a tank that big hehehheheheh
