Thats it...i'm taking the CC/arag/sand out of my tank....
i don't know when i'll do it, but i'm gonna...i've had enough of green tinted crushed coral- and now that its turning brick red, i've had it.
So, how do i do it?
I don't want to release any trapped toxins or create a wild imbalance, or make my rocks fall over....since i have them more openly stacked, they are less stable than ther were when it was a 'rubble pile' design
i posted a pic way back here:
http://www.thereeftank.com/forums/sh...ighlight=redid
Should i remove it a small amount at a time?
Maybe remove it in thirds?
Empty the whole tank and clear it all then put everyone back in?
i think i've asked this before, but i couldn't find where- or i've just thought about doing it so many times that i thought i did
I really don't want to have to figure out how to rebuild my rocks back the way they are again....i like them now and don't want to mess with it anymore.... but i'm sick of the gunk trap my CC has become...

For what it's worth my only B/B regret is that I didn't do it sooner. On the flipside I can relate to the rebuilding - I just had to disassemble to catch an unruly fish and I've spent two nights trying to get the rock work the same. The only thing I could suggest to help is to take a bunch of pictures of your aquascaping for reference later. Best of luck !

Ice, I'm wondering why your sand bed is green? Do you have any sifters?(like a conch or hermits?) I've had my tank for over a year now and I haven't seen green (or red) since the "early days" of cycling. For the longest time it was all white, but now in corners and near liverock it's covered with coralline. And scraping coralline off the glass is a regular chore.

i have about a dozen hermits, and about 70 odd snails- my snails have been breeding like crazy and as far as the teeny hatchlings, it could number in the 1,000s.....
i think a lot of it is nutrients, i've got my nitrates at a decent level 10-20 (better than the 50-70 recently) but its still too much, besides at this point i'm sure they are literally stained....
the camera does make it out to be MUCH more green than it is, but its not what i would consider white either.
i just don't want to deal with it any more... i'm either going to go for a polished glass bottom or a very thin sand layer....
i'd like starboard, but i don't want to go through the hassle of finding it and cutting it into bowfront shape.
Anyone ever paint the outside bottom of their tank? how about something reflective? silver mylar.... i'm just thinking it might look interesting if it dosen't look tacky....

heather you wont be able to see whatever you do to the bottom outside of your tank. i tried it. all you will see is a mirror reflection of the surface of the water. the fish will see it though

That's what I did. Flat white paint. My tank is acrylic and there is no mirror reflection. From a distance it looks kike a sandy bottom.
I've never tried it on a glass tank though.

I've been having trouble locating Acrylic in NJ, if anyone can help? And what thickness should I be looking at for a 48Widex18Highx24Deep? I'm trying to make a more ideal tank than the standard 55 dimensions for a reef and coral tank.
