I would get a nitrate, phosphate and pH kit, and if you have corals I'd nab a calcium and KH/Alkalinity kit.
Are you dosing anything?

i ordered (and am using it right now) this kit: (it's $26 at marinedepot)
SeaChem Multitest: Marine Basic Test Kit
(pH, alkalinity, free/total ammonia, nitrite, nitrate Multi Test Kit)
but once i'm done curing my liverock, and have water in the main tank, i'm ordering salifert test kists for: nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, pH, calcium, KH/Alk, phosphates, magnesium.
no wait, i need that phosphates kit sooner

that should be all you need.
When it comes to test kits. i dont go the cheap route. i want the best for my critters. and salifert is on the top of the list.
Sara,
I am fore warning you now, the salifert ammonia kit is very heard to read the chart. The is really no color variance between some of the readings. So be very careful trying to read it. I use natural sunlight when i read my test results. u may get a different color under your house lights.
I just open the blinds on a window, and use the light from outside.

How often do you guys really test your tanks?
I test for pH and Ca, but after the tank is up, unless there is a problem, that's about it.
I do agree though Sara, those are all of the kits you will need.

Test, you mean I still have to do that! J/k kinda. After test after test reading the same I quit testing everything. Usually just before I do a waterchange I will test. Only ph,ammonia, trate, and trite. Usually the levels are all still 0 so do the normal 20%. If it is showing slight readings (waiting to long to do the change) I do a larger wc then test again and back to normal.
