Testing the "No dumb question" rule again...
Okay...forgive my stupidity...
I know most external pumps can't be used submersibly, but can ANY submersible pump be used externally?
meaning...are there any pumps that HAVE to be used submersibly? (can't be used externally, for whatever reason?)
(coffee hasn't kicked in yet)

Hmmmmmmmmm need to draw line between pump and powerhead on steroids like the Hagen 802, I have used that one for a return pump on my old 29. I think anything that doesn't have the typical in/out pipe like your average Magdrive pump is going to need to be submersed

It's usually a heat issue - submergible pumps run cooler than ones that are not submersible. I would do it with caution.

Some pumps can only run submersed. But, some pumps can do both, like the MAGs. Some pumps, obviously, like Iwakis, should never be submersed. Depends on the pump.

the quite one pumps (not sure of the brand name) can be both, mine has a plate that you switch so that its either 1/2 inch inlet/outlet, or "screen" inlet, 1/2" out. i like it.

BINGO! Just what I was looking for.
Since tearing down the nano...i now have an extra Mag 5 laying around...and was thinking of making a simple CLS for Tammy's tank.
And was gonna set it up such that the mag sat on the outside of the tank.
thanks guys!
