Test Kits

I hope this isn't too basic.

Can anyone recommend a good starter Test Kit for me?

I've got (1) a 40g tank, with only 20lbs of LS, and about 10 hermit crabs. and (2) Another 40g tank, BB, which is ready for the arrival of 45 lbs of uncured Fiji Live Rock later this week.

What type of starter test kit should I be getting?

What should I be testing for?.

What manufacturer makes a good kit for my purposes?

Thanks so much.

During the cycle you should test for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Afterwards you will need to test and adjust your calcium and alkalinity levels. Phosphate test kit is good to have as well.

If you want to skimp, skimp on the ammonia and nitrite kits, you wont need these after the cycle. I would not skimp on the nitrate, calcium, alk, phosphate and ph test kits as you will use these often. Salifert is my favorite brand. Easy to use and easy to read results.

Oh and a hydrometer, if you dont have one already.

If you want to spend some cash wisely, I would invest in a ph pen or monitor and a good refractometer with temp compensation.

If you plan on adding any supplements (ie magnesium or iodine) make sure you have a test kit to test your levels.

Hi PJ,

Seachem and Salifert make good tests. Mapster covered the spectrum of what you should be testing for. I would not opt out of the Ammonia and Nitrite kits though, I think they are necessary, if only to rule out a problem later on.
