Test for copper.

Ok, i have been given a tank from a workmates neihbour, which im about to set up at work.

What im wondering since i dont know the history of this tank;- is there a test/s to tell if copper has ever been used in the tank?
Ie a test that could detect small amounts of copper that may be enough to kill/make inverts sick?
I dont want to put one in the tank and find out the hard way that its been treated with copper 5 years ago...

most LFS will have a copper test kit. some of them may test the water for you. it all depends on the store. Cu kits are one of those use once and prolly never use again, so i would ask the store first if they will do it, even if they charge a buck or two (or whatever you downunderers use for money) you will still come out ahead.

the best thing to do is fill the tank with water and let it sit for a while, then take some of the water to be tested.

also bring a sample of your tap water to make sure it does not have any Cu. also so you would have a reference.

Ill speak to the lfs when i start picking up the saltwater to fill the tank, and see if they do test for it.
Then ill take some across in a couple weeks for them to test if they can do it. They dont usually charge me for testing coz i probably pay half their yearly salary with the amount of money i spend there!

Never had to worry before, my tanks were always new, but a free tank is a good tank!!
