basically yes-and the wiring diagram (figure 4) you'll get with it explains it will too...but i'm here for any questions...

hack an extension cord in half (if your heater it 3-prong make sure the extension cord is too)
-slap a wire nut on the grounds-if you have em
-both neutral wires go to the common jack on the right
-the line hot goes to right hot (120) jack
-the load hot goes to the left NO jack
-run a jumper from the left C to the line hot (120) jack

sounds a lot more complicated than it is!

they will shut off whatever is plugged into them when the setpoint temperature is reached. you can set the differential adjustment as low as 1 degree F...which means in the case of my heater-it fires up everytime it drops into the 79s...off when it hits 80.

they only have one setpoint though so controlling both your heater and lights off one wouldn't really be feasible unless it is just a backup to the heater's own thermostat. in that case if the tank ever reached say 83 degrees (maybe your heater stuck on, or maybe it was just a hot day and no ac) both the heater and lights could be shut down. otherwise it would turn off your lights with the heater everytime the tank hit the temp set point. you could also get a couple and use them to control individual appliances (one for heater, one for lights).

i'd be happy to wire one up for you but we'd have to find one first, add in a few buck for a powerstrip/extension cord, plus shipping (don't exactly want to lose cash on the deal-even though i'm sure you're a nice guy)

Thats exactly what I am looking for. I want an emergency fail safe device. I would rather come home a weekend at the coast to see my lights not on or my heater not on then to find my tank cooking at 95 degrees.
I would need one for my heater and one on a powerstrip for my lights So i guess I would need two. Let me know how much you need and i could paypal you.

you might just check out http://diyreef.com the site was shut down for awhile but appears to be back up...he sells wired and unwired versions of the ranco temp controllers. unless we found the controllers for cheap i couldn't make them much cheaper-if any cheaper. i did some searches online and the best price i'm coming up with is about $60 for the controller alone. sometimes you can get a better deal on ebay. if you find the Ranco ETC-111000-000 for a better price let me know and i could wire it for ya but i can't spend all my nights looking for a needle in a haystack.
