temp and chillers
well im thinking im going to need a chiller. i have 2 fans in my canopy, 2 in my stand and one big one blowing into the stand and the temp got to 83.5 today in there. whats the absolute max temp a tank can get without casualties? looking and the only one that is anywhere near price range is the prime mini 1/10hp. says good for 80gallons, and my total volume is probably around 65-70. anyone have experiance with this chiller? and how good is that 80gallon rating? also im afraid that running it on the same circut as my tank could possibly cause problems with flipping the breaker... any help on this is appreciated.

Hmm, that's a delima. I don't like letting my tank get above about 82, but 84 wouldnt be too much of a problem. Anything higher than that and I'd start to worry.
In terms of chiller rating, I used a 1/4" hp unit on a 80 gallon system, and it would kick on about 4 hours a day in the summer (at 6 amps!). It was a nice unit, but a lot of power. I don't know how long a 1/10hp unit would be on, but quite a bit I imagine.

As long as your not sitting at 85F pritty much all day then you should actually be ok. Your corals should be ok just because they can handle the temp as long as its not that warm all day long.

For the last 2 days ive been freezing water in 2 liter bottles and floating them in my sump on my small tank.
One of my chillers took a crap yesterday Even with my lights off im struggling to keep it at 82 during the night. A sweet bonus of having large CLS pumps.

I just recently got the PCI 1/10th hp chiller based on some good reviews here. It is primarily on my 120 that to make a long story short is built into a bar, and all the fans in the world couldnt keep it below 87ish, now I'm at 78 steady, and the chiller hardly ever turns on. I made some quick connect unions on it, so I can transfer it to my 180 in the event of an AC emergency. That is a Aggresive FOWLR tank, that isnt sealed in a bar type setup, so it doesnt get to hot about 82 ish, but in the heat of summer I have the ability to hook it up there in minutes, and bring the temp down. Just an FYI, I dropped it to about 78 from 82.5 in about 2 hours on a 180 gallon. I got mine for $333 delivered to my doorstep. Hope maybe that helps.

What does "FOWLR" stand for?
I have seen that here and there and just don't know what that means.
