Teeny tiny hermit crabs

My daughter found, in her fish only tank today, the teeniest hermit crab we have ever seen.

Do these boogers spawn in tanks? I did not know that they did. I wish I had nabbed a pic of him before I put him back because now I cant find them at all.

Hi Adrienne!
There is a Orange Micro Hermit Crab!
This is a tiny little hermit from Marshall Island in the Pacific. It is suppose to be reef safe and stay very small. Don't have much info on them!
I have a micro hermit and believed it came from IPSF order. I have not seen anything on hermits spawning in an aquarium but your daughter may have the right conditions in her tank for this to happen. Pretty cool though! Johnny

Crabs have free floating larvae so while they may spawn, the larvae usually become fish food or blender mush through the PH's. Is it possible it's been in there a while and you just never noticed it until it got a little bigger? I found a baby pistol shrimp in my nano once...no bigger than my pinky fingernail and I hadn't added anything to the tank for months. I think he got et

I doubt its something from IPSF since I have never purchased anything from them. All the life in my sand has appeared via my live rock. Although 'micro hermits' do sound cute - just not in my reef. I have had these hermits now for 18 months and the rock and sand for a very long time. I have not added anything in that tank in 5 or 6 months. I found it odd that I should only find one although I have to admit I have been a bit busy to actually get up close and look real hard.

Who knows.

He is almost clear and has no coloration. Creepy little bugger.
