TDS @ 21- time to change?

I have an Air Water & Ice 5 stage filter unit and the water out was reading 0 when I installed it. Now the TDS is at 21. I haven't ran 100 gallons of RO/DI water yet. Could it be time to change the filters already?

whats your source TDS??

you at a minimum need to change your DI and see what that does for you

OK, the water going in is at 68. I used another cup to catch the water and test it and it read zero. Tried it again in the original cup and it read 21, so I think the cup may have something in it. I then tried the new cup again and got 10, so maybe something leached out since it is plastic. I think the first thing I am going to do is order an inline meter instead of the handheld. Where is a good place to get a reliable one?

handhelds are plenty reliable.

the key to testing your oputput water is a absolutely clean glass container to collect the wter to be tested for TDS in. even the tiniest amount of residual saltwater or dust or anything int he glass will skew your results

im willing ot bet you are still at or real close to zero. get a perfectly clean glass to collect the water in right out of the RO/di unit after it has been running a while...and test again

Thanks. I will try it again. I also noted the water temp is about 64 degrees, cold spell here right now, would that cause them to creep up a little?

remember when you first turn the r/o d/i unit on you need to waste 1 or 2 gallons.
this could be the reason for your wild readings.
With TDS that low to start with your R/O unit itself should make the water in the low 10's if not lower. you need to check and see what the TDS is after the membrane. When is the last time you changed your DI?
If it was a new unit when you bought it it should be way to soon to replace membranes or filters.

Take a reading before DI I bet you need to change the DI.

The unit was new and has run about 100 gallons or less. I did get another cup to catch the water to test and it read 4, so I think my issue is the container other than the water.

I tested mine in a cup that had a tiny amount of salt residue...it tested ~050...I redid the test in a clean cup and it tested 002...I'll bet the cup is your culprit.
