Tank switching question
Ok here is whats onmy mind. I am thinking of buying a new 35 or 40 gallon reef tank . And my question is how long do i wait to put my critters in the new tank? My plans are to use all my equitment from the 35 i have now rocks LR and all so will the tank have a huge cycle or will it be ok to put them in a new home fairly quickly. I would like to put most of my water from the old tank in the new one is that a good or bad idea not really sure ?

Why are you switching from a 35 to a "35 or 40" why not go bigger if you are buying a new tank anyway?

Is this new rock? I don't understand Now rock? I assume typo, if you putting in new sand and "new" live rock it is going to depend on how muck rock and how LIVE it is. To help reduce the cycle you will want to use your old water as well. I would say if you can get 30 pounds or so LR in there thats quality you should bi ok, but you should always wait for a few weeks and keep an eye on your levels, then slowly add things. Don't ever assume you won't get a cycle and don't throw in all the livestock at once.

Good point
But I switched over all my stuff from my nanocubes to a 75 and I put my critters in right away.
Everyone survived just fine

The reason i dont want to go bigger is i have a 55 iam starting and a 35 hex up and running but its alittle old and has a few scratches that bug me. And all my rock is like a year old not going to add anymore to the new one unless i need a piece or two . And i just bought the light for the hex a few weeks ago its a nice mh light and i want the tank i buy new to fit the light and so on lol

Okay that makes more sense. Your original post was pretty vague. I understand now.

In that case you should be ok. I have done that many times with no issues, I just setup a tank this week doing that and had no issues as well.

i just switched from a 75 to a 90. not so much as an upgrade, but my 75 was starting to wither away (i bought it used also). I figured if I was going to build a new stand, I might as well get a new tank.
I switch everything the same day. water, rock, and livestock. Of course I had to add more saltwater which was prepared the previous day. everything survived. I used most of the old sandbed, and added new also.
All was done in about a 4 hour span.

Yep, you can swap it without too much trouble. You may stir stuff up, so don't be afraid of doing large water changes a couple times in the day's immediately after the switch, but it should be without trouble.
