Tank Room Painting
Hi Gang
Unfortunately I have to paint the entire room (my basement) that my 180 is in. The tank is not covered and I have a sump in the stand. Windows will be open and fans will be running, buuut....am I setting myself up for disaster - those are some strong fumes! Should I just try to cover the tank and sump. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Ron

arent there kinds of paint that dont have those strong fumes, like waterbased that you can roll on or something? (Im just a non-house-painting female, so this may not make sense.....)

I'm in construction:
The epa has mandated that paints that dont need a special license be safe. Even high end stuff like aquafleck is safe now.
They just smell..LOL
So I would say unless you are using a two part epoxy or auto spray your safe. I'd keep it out of the water though
. ;-) If you live so will they

LOL to both of you
Creepette
I'm pretty much a non-painting male, not my favorite job. I usually get more paint on me than the walls.
Mafiaman -
So let me get this straight. If I lock my wife in the basement for say an hour or so and she's ok, than my tank will be ok

we decided to paint the wat that contained the 125g. while painting i blooped a drop of paint directly into the tank. it disippated really quickly, very surprising, i was planning on jumping in to scoop it out. anyway, i never saw any harm come to the system because of it. i ran carbon just to be sure. so i would think as long as the ventilation is fine and you do not dump the entire gallon in the tank i think you will be fine.

Sounds to me like your "SOL" Ron I would put some type of drop cloth over the tank just to keep out any splatter. Just look at the bright side of it, once the room is finished you can point out how drab the tank looks now since the new paint! And that you’ll just have to get some more corals to brighten it up.

ok i have one: I took my wooden hood over to my dads so he could make the opening bigger and he decided he just had to re-stain it. how long until I should put it back over the tank?? (he just stained the outside, not the inside...)

Stain soaks into the wood really quick! Just make sure that it’s completely dry & not tacky before putting it back on the tank.

thanks a ton. i felt bad for my fish; they were all in the dark, so i stole the little light away from my 10g hospital tank and put it on the 30g. now I guess the hood is dry enough to use!

Just as a precaution, we turned off the skimmer, because it injects air and all its contaminants. Maybe no big deal, but just to be safe
