Tank Life

While at my local fish store yesterday the owner made a comment that concerns me a bit. I have a 58 gallon Oceanic glass tank that I bought back in 93? when I was in HS. It was set up as a fresh water tank for about 3 years and then taken down and stored while I was in college. The tank is now in my living room as a reef tank (has been for about 7 months).

The store owner said that most tanks don't last that long and I might be asking for a leak.

Is he right? Should I be looking for a new tank? I plan on upgrading when our new house is done - 2+ years (just working with an architect now) but really don't want to change everything over just yet.

Thanks in advance

Scott

Welcome to TRT sbojan!

I would give a call to Oceanic, How long was it dry? I have heard that the seals dry out. When it was freash water, was it ever treated with copper? (very made thing for Reefs) It might be a good time to consider a new one that is RR (Reef Ready). With the predrilled holes for overflow and maybe Closed Loop. If it was me I would go with a new one that was RR.

yeah i would give the company a call. but since it has been up and running for a bit now i would think it is okay, as rich pointed out, if you used copper you are asking for trouble. maybe keeping an eye on the seams form time to time.
when you decide to move in to the new house why not incorpate a new tank into it also, even a fish room..
