tank hit 89 degrees last night!

hey all,

just wanted to share my couple of hours of freaking out yesterday with you all today:

I drove two hours away from my apartment in the morning (Saturday) to go help a friend finish plumbing his 180 gallon tank and 125 gallon tank to his 100 gallon sump. About a half an hour after I left, my gf calls my friend telling him that the A/C went out in our apartment and my buddy advises her to turn the halides off of my 40 gallon sps tank. I get to my buddies place, he tells me about it, and instantly I am on the phone.

A couple of hours later:
My gf (Abbey) had to go to work, so I have her call me when she gets back to the apartment. She calls and says, "The temp controller only says 81 degrees", so I'm thinking whew! got that under control. I tell her that that is the temp of the sump right now, and in efforts to cool the tank down earlier I told her to turn off the return pump, but leave the closed loop on for circulation. She throws the probe in the display tank... 82, 84, 86 (I am starting to sweat as she counts these off), and finally 89 degrees! Yikes, my sps are dead...

Forward the story... Abbey then went and put every possible fan pointing at the tank! She told me that she would get it under control! I was considering driving home at this point (1 in the morning), but she assured me she would get it under control. I get home early this morning and everything is great! Only lost two acros and the tank temp is at 82 degrees. Abbey stayed up until 3 in the morning getting fans and watching the temp until it dropped slowly to 82. She even took down the industrial fan the construction guys have been using for themselves out on the roof and blasted it at the tank!

Moral of the story: Disasters can be avoided, as long as you have a great partner like mine!

Dude, you found a keeper
Glad it turned out mostly OK, but seriously this is a good reminder to design a system that is not dependent on working AC to maintain tank temp.
Chillers work well but are pricey, require a pricey controller or a clever DIY with a dual mode high/low controller adapted from HVAC, not to mention the added cost of running a chiller
Sumped tanks are easier to deal with temp wise, esp if you have a auto topoff that holds like 5 gals of water. A couple of < $10 clip on fans from Wally over the sump will usually do the trick, Canopies that open from the top are good, even cabinet doors that open wide are good, you can clip fans there and get the airflow going, evap will drop the temp so the trick is to have 2 heaters, one set at normal temp, the back up 2ºF lower, and a large top off reservoir , esp if no one can be there to watch .
Caveat, the higher the ambient humidity, the less effective this is, tho in hot weather venting the room should keep the hoomidity down to where evap cooling works to some appreciable degree.
Ugly hot muggy days in the deep south, may require, serios AC and Chillers, Casey or GregT , Roger or several others can address that better than I.
I live in So Oregon, and usually the humidity is fine except for the occasional thunder storm on hot days, we get temps in the 90-100s that are not that bad. Up in the Portland are with all the big rivers and higher humidity, 90º days send folks to the hospital

Doug,
I totally agree with you on your many points. I designed my system to run as cool as I could so that NC summers wouldn't cause any problems. I have an open canopy (80% open on top and fully open on back), a temp controller controlling two fans (one on display tank and one on the sump), a 20 gallon topoff for a 40 gallon tank. I live in a B&B so there are two huge A/C units that blast out the cool air its just that our thermostat went out!

The problem with the heat on our tank was that I run two Velocity pumps. This enables me to run the tank without a heater, but unfortunately it requires a little bit of fans to cool it down occasionally, so I was forced to shut off one of my pumps and halides.

I am just thankful that I didn't lose much.

I am moving back to MN in a couple of years, so I won't have to deal with all of this heat anymore! Tank in the basement, cool year round....
