tank finally running

After a few rough patches my 90g finally has some rock and water in it.. originally i had an oceanic sump with baffles and all. it had a bulkhead with my pump ran externally. for whatever reason i could not get the the bulkhead to seal. i tried several times. each time i had to pump the water in and out and so on...with a very small 300gph pump. such a headache. i finally got so frustrated i took it out and just put in a standard 29g i had in the garage and dropped my pump in since its submersible anyway. so after a successfull leak test i finally have it running. 60lbs of aragonite, 90lbs of dry base rock. now i just gotta get some lv to seed the base rock. its not much of a post but i needed an outlet for my frustrations.

oh on another note. my overflow going into my sump is quite loud, any ideas?

This should help you out for the noisy overflow. I had the same problem and ran an airline down through the standpipe to the sump....

Glad to hear you got things sorted out and have the tank running now. Best of luck with quieting down the overflow as well.

thanks. i checked out the other post. my problem is not with the standpipe, it is quiet as can be. its where it flows into my sump. i have the pipe about an inch and a half or so below the surface in the sump. this is where i am getting a lot of noise the water. i might just need to slow it down.ill close the ball valve a little and see. im running a mag 9.5 for the return so its flowing pretty fast.

the stand used to be stained but it had a very "grainy" look and the wife didnt like it. so i painted it black. it needs another coat. but with the munchkins runnin around its hard to find time for it to dry before they are able to bang on it. i have half the canopy built. i just need to get another sheet of plywood to make the lid that flips up. not really a priority at the moment.

So the water rushing out of the pipe into the sump was making all the noise. i slid an elbow(no glue) on the end to add a little friction. it helped dramatically. now i just hear the mag pump mostly. i took a sponge like you wash your car with and cut out the outline of the pump so it rests inside the sponge. i figured it would help with the vibrations but not so much.

oh in the above pic that is a metal latch/lock. I have twin toddlers and before i had water in the sump they would open the doors and throw stuff in the sump. so i have to lock them out. i couldnt find a black one so when i put the second coat on ill paint it then.

Try submerging the intake of the sump as far into the water as possible and drill holes in the sides so that water can escape at more points. As for the return pump, filter pads around it to cushion it so that it does not rest on the sump itself is a good idea. I also do the same. Just make sure that if the filter/sponge material that you use is replaced periodically if it is inline with any of the flow of the water as it will be a nitrate trap.

good idea i never thought of that. i originally had it further in the sump but all the back pressure caused it to "flush" i guess the holes would help with that.
