Tang Recommendations Please

I want to add at tank to my 125. Partially because they are pretty, partially because they are good at eating algae. None of hte husbandry books I have adequately cover these most popular of fishes. I realize that there are concerns about long term maintenance as some of the species can become quite large or tend towards aggression...

Can I have some recommendations?

I particularly like the Achilles Tang...any thoughts on this species in particular?

How about Blue Tangs, or Purples?

What's "reef safe" and what's not....

there are lots of suitable tangs for a reef tank. the achillies tang was one of my favorites also but have a tendancy to nip at corals so should be avoided in a reef tank. the Hippo tang(yellow tailed blue) is a great reef tang and is fairly inexpensive to start with, the yellow tang is another good reef tang as is the powder blue and the purple tang(redsea) these 2 later tangs can be a little on the aggressive side towards other conspecific species. the powder brown ,yelow eyed kole(spotted brisstletooth) are also great reef tangs. the bristletooth eats the brown diatoms so is a nice addition to new tangs with algae problems. the Naso is a very nice tang but gets quite large so should consider this before any purchase. i personally have a redsea tang and hes not to territorial unless somthing comes near his food, then he will chase them away.

Hi herald

I too, like tangs.

Achilles and Powder Blues being on the top of the list.

Aside from being the prettiest of the bunch (IMO ) they also seem to be the hardest to care for. Powder Blues especially (probably because they are more common than Achilles) seem to be the topic of many a heartbreak post on the reefing boards; I had my own go around with one

The keys to keeping them healthy and happy are top-drawer water quality, good nutrition and lack of stress (whether from confining tanks or from tankmates.) A mature tank, feeding selcon soaked Nori (occasionally soaked in garlic as well) and live "greens" like our sponsor ISPF's Tang Heaven will go a long ways towards your success with them.

I had a Kole tang that I really liked and who was doing very well until he fell victim to a dinoflagellate outbreak. He was a very placid fish if a little shy. I gave to a friend a yellow tang I had for quite a while that was tougher than nails and was always out in the open. I have three kids at my house and with all the banging, yelling and running, he was still never shy and never had a spot of ich. Definitely kid tested
