Tang has start of laterel line erosion

My 2 year old PT has the start of laterel line erosion. It is just beginning at the base of it's tail and going forward. Not much yet but I want to stop it before it gets too bad. How do you treat this?
The tang gets fed formula 1, formula 2, prime reef, mysis, and krill. I also clip some seaweeds selects sheets in the tank every day. It also eats macros from a refugium. The water parameters are as follows.
pH 8.2
temp 82
ammo 0
nitrite 0
nitrate <5ppm
Water changes are 10% every 2 weeks.
The tanks parameters seem fine and it gets a variety of different foods. The only thing I can think of is that the carbon is causing it. I run carbon 24/7. Could this be the problem? The tang is roughly 4 inches and is the only inhabitant of a 55 gallon semi-reef.
Any help would be appreciated. The tang still has bright coloring and eats like a pig.

^bump^

I've never had to treat this, perhaps someone else has.

Steve; The selcon is a good idea, perhaps also vita-chem. Of course any types of natural algaes you could get it to eat would be of help.

Its also possible that its larger size and limited space of a 55 gal. is causing stress on the tang. Just a thought, as they love open spaces.

BUT, here is a experience I had a few years ago with a sailfin. Just out of the blue, it developed LLE, like yours. From some articles I remember reading, I thought of the carbon also, as everything else seemed fine, including its diet.

I talked by phone with a few experts out there and one even had the same results as myself. I had just switched carbon brands to another well known product. It was my belief that the extra dust from some carbons and not the carbon removing anything from the water itself, was the cause. One of the aquarists I spoke to had the same results with the same brand

I wont mention the brand name, but can tell you whats good, that I have used. Marinelands Black Diamond is the best I have used and Two Little Fishies product is close behind, if not as good. There may be others, I am sure, but these two are the ones I have used and tested.

Anyways, when I switched back to Black Diamond, the tangs erosion reversed itself. Many aquarists run carbon on a regular basis and have healthy tangs, so I would say to make sure one does not use a product, esp. a cheaper one, that leaches carbon dust.

Of course, these are just my experience,s, and perhaps something else unknown came into play, with the sailfins erosion, but one never knows, Hope that info is of some assistance to you.

Doug,
That's really wierd that you mention switching carbon. I always used Black Diamond but recently switched to a different brand when the store was out. This type did have a LOT of dust. I must have rinsed it for 15 minutes. I had never thought about the carbon type being a problem. I'll pull it out tonight. Thanks.

Steve
The LLE that I have seen in LFS's has mostly affected the front of the fish, not the back. I find it strange that yours is starting from the back??? Usually the area in front of and over the eyes is most affected in yellow tangs for example. your diet sounds great, keep up the variety, especially live and dried algaes. I think I also remember a year or so ago a discussion on excess electrical current causing HLLE. Do you have a grounding probe? Otherwise, I think I'd check out the carbon.

Good luck-
Brooke

It's an odd one alright. The front of the tang is fine. It's just the lateral line starting at the base of the tail and following the line toward the front. Not a lot but it's starting. I'll try a grounding probe and go back to the carbon I used to use.

Definatly use the selcon and a grounding probe, also a series of accelerated water changes to lower the nitrate level even more.
Introduce some macro perhaps?

Hi Steve,

Sorry to hear that! I, too, haven't had any direct experience with this, but most of what I've heard and read is succinctly covered here: http://saltaquarium.about.com/librar...y/aa040901.htm

I'd certainly think about removing your carbon as all your other water parameters and the diet you've selected seem A-OK. Additionally, you may also think about adding a grounding probe if you don't already have one.

I wish you good luck and hope your tang makes a speedy recovery!

Regards,
Steve

Thanks for the link Reef Rat.
Well it looks like there is no definitive cause or treatment for this. The nitrates are low enough so that's not it. It eats a varied diet so that's not it. It's not stressed by other tankmates so that's not it. I'm going to try this. Let me know if it's a good idea.
1. Remove carbon
2 Add a grounding probe
3. Soak food in Selcon before feeding
4. Try feeding some brocolli and peas
If this doesn't work, I'm at a loss at what to do. Wish me luck.

Hmmmmmm, interesting on your carbon change also. Hope that helps. I have heard the stray voltage thing also, but I was running a grounding probe,[ Kent ], when it happened to my tang.
