yeah my bare bottom still gets layers of detritus crapped all over it from my live rock and the animals' waste. oh well, you gotta siphon the stuff out but the way i see it is its still a lot cleaner than a sandbed

Thanks Bob, only the 180 FO is really the only one i'll be interested in using it in,for the wet/dry sump noise as it's in the LR (living room)
the 75 reef is sumpless, nothing to quiet down,(could use a fan for the ballast's tho)
the 200 oceanic that i got to replace the 75 will have a sump etc.
whenever i get my behind off it's behind , and get everything downstairs ,it'll be better, and quieter,,,i hope,,,,watta ya doing that day?

Yes, I noticed that already creep and paint. I wonder if I need more circulation. What do you guys do about it? Siphon it or blow it around with a ph or turkey baster and let the skimmer deal with it?

BOB!!!! your tank is beeeeautiful! I love the rock work. Especially that cantilever effect in the first picture.
Jeff - Since I don't steaks to offer, I could take you to Gerhard's that Tom mentions. It's maybe 4 blocks from my house

Good morning Bob,
It depends on what type of skimmer you are running IMO. My old AquaC skimmer wouldn't come close to picking up detritus, but my new twin Beckett makes easy work of it, however, I still have to manually get the detritus into the water column as both my main tank and sump do not have enough water flow to achieve this.

Bob
I have enough circulation that the only thing I get is the little piles of sand. When I siphon them out, the water from them is yellow though. Finer, lighter detrius is picked up by the wet running becket.
Then the whole tank is turned over through the UV about once every two hours. The UV will break those P bonds, release water soluble P, feed water borne bacteria and phyto, that's picked up by the wet becket again.

Spanky, do you run UV 24/7 or only during the day or ...?
On the particulate detritus, ditto here. I get about half a cup/week (of stuff that's too heavy to stay in the water column) from the 400lbs of rock. The silt-size stuff that can stay in the water column can get filtered out, though
The hard part, I think, is trying to blow out every rock from every side to get it out where I can siphon it. I wonder how anyone could do that if they don't have a walkaround tank?

Si Senorita, 24/7. I'm going for the invisible water look.

Thanks cath! I forgot that piece of rock until I tore down the tank. I weighs about 30 lbs and was hard to move around in the tank without breaking any corals.

Thanks guys,
I'm thinking about a Becket type skimmer for the next upgrade but I'll have to live with my two smaller skimmers for now. Turnover is about 17x an hour, low but not bad. I may up that too but not sure how right now. I am going to leave the tank alone for now and see what happens.

I guess I really need to invest in UV. Hopefully my Euroreef is good enough to take out the detritus because I refuse to upgrade again! I should figure out a way to build my own or something, being the DIY pro that I am (feel the sarcasm dripping off that text).

Thanks, Spanky!! A UV will be next on my wish list. I just wait for you to figure it all out, then I do what you do.

Good morning Paint,
If I decide to purchase a UV in the future it will be one of the kits offered here: http://store.saltyzoo.com/drygoods/filtration/uv.php
