taking out hang on filter

I am experimenting with removing my hang on aquaclear 500 filter. I just think it harbors so much gunk in it and not really needed. I have a 58gal with 2 seios( 820 and 620), maxijet 900, 60+lbs of live rock, a 10 gal fuge and a aqua C remora skimmer, I think I have plenty of water flow and I think enough filtration. My tank has always been pretty stable, but I have always had a bit of issues with cyano.. pleas give me opinions. I clean the hang on filter, but think it's kind of redundant and hard to clean.

I leave my HoB running with nothing in it. Some floss in a bag following a water change and maybe some carbon now and then is it. After one day I remove the floss and toss it. Leaving a filter in the HoB is a cyano factory.

I'm working on getting mine off the back of my tank as well. I think it sounds like you've got plenty of flow. My only concern is the tank inhabitants...do you have a reef tank? If so...do you think the removal of the AC500 will disturb the circulation to which these corals have become accustomed? I'm not a reefer, but those would be my concerns and questions to all these reefheads on this site.

Do you have fish?60lbs of LR is low!The rule is 1 1/2 - 2lbs of rock per gallon.
